Consulting

About

An engineer's approach to how people learn.

Orango Consulting helps colleges, universities, and schools build better teaching and student support, from tutoring programs and TA training to curriculum redesign for the AI age. It grew out of years of one-on-one tutoring spent seeing exactly where students get lost.

How Orango started

Built from what one-on-one tutoring revealed.

Matt began tutoring college chemistry in 2021, focusing on general and organic chemistry, the courses where capable students most often hit a wall. In 2023 he founded Orango, building a team of trained tutors with standardized instructional methods and the systems to run it.

Working one-on-one with students who had already been through lectures, office hours, and TA sessions revealed a pattern. The same misconceptions came up again and again, and they usually traced back to how the course was taught and supported, not to the students themselves.

Orango Consulting exists to take that knowledge upstream: to help institutions fix the systems that create those gaps, instead of repairing them one student at a time.

Matt holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Before building Orango, he worked in industry leading process development and technical projects, where the job was to find out why a complex system wasn’t producing the result it should, and fix the root cause.

He brought that mindset to education: recruiting and training tutors, building instructional standards, and designing the systems a tutoring company runs on. Orango Consulting applies the same thinking at the scale of a course, a department, or an institution.

What we believe

The question is which effort matters.

AI changes what education has to do.

Students now have tools that can complete much of the work traditionally used to teach and assess them. That is both an opportunity and a risk.

Neither extreme works.

Pretending AI doesn’t exist leaves students unprepared. Automating everything and assuming efficiency equals learning leaves them without the skills their education is supposed to build.

The real question is which effort matters.

Some cognitive work can responsibly be handed to AI. Some is exactly the work that builds competence. Telling the two apart is a design problem, and it’s the one we help institutions solve.

How we work

Process thinking, applied to people.

01

Diagnose before prescribing.

We map how students actually move through a course, from lectures and assignments to office hours, TAs, tutoring, and AI, before recommending anything.

02

Find the root cause.

When students keep needing help with the same concept, the answer is rarely more tutors. It’s usually sequencing, instruction, TA preparation, or assessment.

03

Build for your people.

We design changes your faculty, TAs, and staff can run long after we’re gone.

04

Measure what changes.

We agree on outcomes up front and track them, so you can see whether the work is working.

It’s process thinking applied with respect for the fact that education is made of people, not parts.

Orango tutoring

Tutoring keeps us close to what students experience right now.

Orango Consulting is part of Orango LLC, which also provides one-on-one chemistry tutoring directly to students. The two inform each other: tutoring keeps us close to what students are experiencing right now, and consulting lets us fix what we see at the source.
